snowy owl plum island Dec 26 2009 by stevehdc

snowy owl plum island Dec 26 2009

Apologies for the quality. The Owl was way outside the range of my 400mm lens, coupled with gusty winds and sleet. He was a few hundred yards in back of the maintenance buildings on the marsh side of Plum Island. This was a Lifer for us - could have sat and watched it for hours.

Youngest birder ever by stevehdc

Youngest birder ever

Click HERE to see this photo larger with a black background

Nine day old Jack scoping the ducks on the Potomac River. I really couldn't pull him away - you can see the intensity he brings to scoping. All was good identifying Ruddy Ducks, Coots, Northern Shovelers, etc. until he started gumming the lens..

King Rail bathtime by stevehdc

King Rail bathtime

We went to Huntley Meadows in Alexandria, VA this morning in search of the King Rail and its little family. It was a great morning with the Rails as well as lots of Thrashers, a distant Barred Owl letting us know it was there and many of the usual suspects. And nice seeing all the other birders too.

The shot above is the pre-bath shot, and the pictures below are during the bath (click on the photo to see the others of the Rail). The Rail apparently decided we were all harmless and gave us quite a show.

Apologies for the quality of these photos - my lens is heading to the repair shop tomorrow. It's no longer focusing properly and is making whacky settings in my camera (I had the camera on automatic). Apparently that's what happens to camera lenses after two years of mud, sand, bouncing around in the trunk and having ice cream dripped on and literally into it...(I hadn't noticed the hole on the bottom of my cone :)

white ibis at huntley meadows by stevehdc

white ibis at huntley meadows

Juvenile White Ibis at Huntley Meadows this morning. Quite a rare bird for Fairfax County, VA. Way outside the range of my 400mm lens - this photo is cropped & enlarged more than 100%. Click on "All Sizes" above to see it larger.

Great Egret at Huntley Meadows by stevehdc

Great Egret at Huntley Meadows

It was a very gray, gloomy day yesterday but I had a fun few hours hiking around. The Egrets are back at Huntley Meadows in Virginia and fishing up a storm. Pretty impressive how much these birds eat each day...
