Surf or White-winged Scoters?Taken on the Potomac River in Washington, DC yesteday hanging out with Horned Grebes. They look like White-winged to me due to the oval white patch next to their bill rather than a vertical white patch. No white is visible on their secondaries. Thoughts? I'm new with Scoters so I'm not sure. Three more photos below. Thanks everyone! Uploaded on Nov 13, 2009 Youngest birder ever

We went to Huntley Meadows in Alexandria, VA this morning in search of the King Rail and its little family. It was a great morning with the Rails as well as lots of Thrashers, a distant Barred Owl letting us know it was there and many of the usual suspects. And nice seeing all the other birders too. Uploaded on Jul 29, 2009 white ibis at huntley meadowsJuvenile White Ibis at Huntley Meadows this morning. Quite a rare bird for Fairfax County, VA. Way outside the range of my 400mm lens - this photo is cropped & enlarged more than 100%. Click on "All Sizes" above to see it larger. Uploaded on Jul 19, 2009 Great Egret at Huntley MeadowsIt was a very gray, gloomy day yesterday but I had a fun few hours hiking around. The Egrets are back at Huntley Meadows in Virginia and fishing up a storm. Pretty impressive how much these birds eat each day... Uploaded on Jun 29, 2009 |
