A Taste of Us (Short Film) by Shavar

A Taste of Us (Short Film)

Thought you might like to watch my second short film in which I wrote, directed and edited. We shot the film in South Central Los Angeles on a shoestring budget and over a weekend. My intentions were to originally pitch it as a pilot (possible television show idea) presentation to the new urban television cable network at the time, TV One. Their demographic was targeted to an older audience so I figured this piece might work. I never did get around to pitching it to the network because I ended up with a distribution deal to make my first feature film for DVD called Lord Help Us. It was because of this short film that allowed that to happen.

This short, I dedicate to my father, Henry Alvin Ross, who died of a sudden heart attack at age 38 on the 4th of July in 1988. I was 17. Today, at age 38 myself, I pray that God's grace will allow me to live pass this day.

I hope to continue to learn how to direct, write and edit more films, long or short.

Happy Independence Day.

Watch A Taste of Us (Short Film)

From director/writer/editor Shavar Ross's second short film. 2004. A Taste of Us is an urban television drama that envelops the viewer from start to finish. Set in the 1960's segregated south, a small town minister comes together with his dysfunctional family on Thanksgiving Day, where the main dish is not that of supper, but of rising conflict among each other.

The Reverend Henry Lee Thomas, a prominent community leader is driven in ministry and counseling of his beloved church flock. Ironically the Reverend fails to provide the same love and attention to his own family.

Determined to keep the peace at the supper table, he comes to realize perhaps too late, how important his family really means to him. In "A Taste of Us" viewers get a taste of this family's life, conflict and resolution.
