Mission Bay is San Francisco's newest neighborhood. A master-planned redevelopment of a little less than one-half square mile of former railyards and light industrial sites on the waterfront near downtown, it's a midrise mix of condos, shops, offices and parks, anchored by a medical school campus and a commuter rail terminal. Under construction since the millennium, it's now at roughly the midpoint of development (these photos were taken in Summer 2010). In this photoessay, Mission Bay is considered as an example of how to build -- and how not to build -- a 21st Century neighborhood.
