spring
I was just out to take a photo of the lilacs in my backyard before they faded away. I wasn't expecting this visitor.

Alexis is Three (and I don't shoot kids; at least, not with a camera. ;-) )
Knock knock...anybody home? Still speaking to me? *peers around sheepishly*
How could I say no to my daughter's best friend (and one of the sweetest people on earth) when she asked me to do some shots (studio) of her infamous daughter, Alexis (better known as Lexi or Lu) and herself? Little children scare me. I work much better with teenagers (warped, I know), and how would I keep her still? Keep her interested? Animated? Oh, scratch that last one, this is, afterall, ALEXIS.
I took these shots on March 7th and I had not picked up my camera since February 2nd due to sickness, depression, my usual MO. I felt a little panicky, so I tried to plan the night before. I made up a little purse and filled it with goodies (including these stylin' shades that she loved), I filled a zebra print box full of old costume jewelry. The markers were ready, as was the big stuffed dog and, for desperation, my pockets were full of Starbursts. :-D A little bribery never hurt, eh? At the last minute I got a text message from Amanda, asking if she could bring her cousin and her 6-month old baby. I felt the need for a Valium and said, "Sure, no problem!" The baby, Madison, was a cake walk. The only desperate moment followed by a flash of inspiration was how to get her to look at the camera when calling her name was not working (she's not a dog, Carol). A quick trick with my cellphone and using all the various, craziest tones when I had the shot worked like a champ and I was able to get some beautiful photos of a beautiful baby.
Mom loves the photos, I was able to resist a shot of tequila afterwards, and I felt pretty good about the shoot from a non-OPK person whose only other experience close to this was when I threatened to SHOOT the 8-year old who kicked the back of my seat from LA to Cincinnati.

Security and Love
Mom gives her very happy and well-behaved (Thank you, God) baby a genuine loving kiss. If we could only feel this secure and loved the rest of our lives.

The Next Joan Crawford
Lu didn't want ANYTHING to do with this huge antique frame I picked up at an estate auction. I brought it out of my bedroom and asked if she wanted to be in the picture and she wanted no part of it. Instead of trying to coax (or bribe) her, I said "ok" and put it back in the bedroom. It wasn't too long, a few shots later, that she said "I want to be in the big picture." :-D I think that strange things like this scare children and she needed some time to think about it. *OUCH! Twists arm patting self on back*
Back to reality...I should have been paying more attention to my other subject in the shot and had Amanda get her hair out of her face so we could see her as she smiled down at Lexi. BIG DEMERITS on that one. It won't be happening again.
