I don't go in for a lot of ornament but I had the same reaction. There is just so much detail in this.

The first garden spirit house I ever saw was in Susana Walton's La Mortella, on Isola d'Ischia in the Bay of Maples, Italy. I have a slide (pre-digital) of her spirit house (somewhere) that is very similar to this one. Susana was in love with hers, having brought it back from Thailand herself years before.

Hey Mark -

I found someone who has pictured the spirit house I saw in Lady Susana's La Mortella garden in Italy, which I found to be reminiscent of yours:

I see what you mean, Sean, very similar. Nice. Like a lot of garden art, I appreciate seeing it in other people's gardens but think I'd get tired of any particular piece in my own garden.
Have you been to Chanticleer near Philadephia? They have quite a few pieces by Marsha nicely sited. I've got a batch of photos from that garden in a set. Very edgy I think.
Hey, if you haven't been to Sherry and Fred's garden where I shot that Spirit House we should go see it some time. I always like going back there.

A Thai friend in Hawai'i had one of these spirit houses, which is really an altar, used to appease the local spirits around the dwelling. Offerings of incense, fruit, flowers and joss papers are placed within the structure.
