Through the Trees

Through the Trees

Taken at Beecraigs country park, near Linlithgow in Scotland, on an afternoon with really lovely golden light.

This is part of an experiment in zoom exposure, where the camera is still (in this case on a tripod facing directly up at some Fir trees) and you manually zoom the lens during a 2 or so second exposure. Gives a nice sense of movement and a fair bit of abstractness to the shot.

After the massive storms Scotland had, some of these trees were a bit unsteady, to say the least, and I didn't see the 'DANGER KEEP OUT, TREES AT RISK OF FALLING' sign until I had finished the session, d'oh!

Night Lighthouse

Night Lighthouse

Taken at Newhaven, Edinburgh. I usually shoot this lighthouse from further back to take in the surroundings of the shore and the harbour, but really liked the lines of the lighthouse in the dark against the night sky so shot upward - and the slight left bias is intential too to give it a little more energy.

I was down in Newhaven to play with my newest little purchase, a ball head for the tripod, with a quick release plate. My god, it's like night and day. So so much easier to set up and compose shots.

Bridge to Nowhere

Bridge to Nowhere

A classic (again) of Flickr-ites, this bridge is at Belhaven near Dunbar and connects the shore to the wide beach on the left, over a tidal river. Several times a day the tide rises and floods the river, stranding the bridge, so it stands isolated in the middle of the water. A touch surreal and a good subject.

I came down to Belhaven to test out my newest sneaky purchase, a set of Lee Hard Grad filters. Finding these filters is at times like hens teeth, due to Lee being slow in making them and also having limited distribution. But I found a shop in London that had some :-).

So I needed a hard horizon to test the filters out, hence Belhaven. Really like having the choice of strengths and after a while of living with a soft filter and making do it's much easier to get a fair light balance in the photo.

Jagged Pier at St Monans

Jagged Pier at St Monans

Another one that has been done many times by Flickr-ites and for good reason, it's an amazing object to photograph with more leading lines than you can shake a stick at.

For those of you who don't know, this is a pier in the little town of St Monans in Fife, Scotland and usually (and in this shot) has fisherman at the end of it.

This a long exposure shot taken in November 2011 with a Lee Big Stopper and an ND filter.

Human Touch

Human Touch

Title shamelessly borrowed from a completely different photograph by the esteemed Rod Monkey on Flickr.

This is the outer shell of the FirstSite building in Colchester, Essex, which someone had obviously touched before me with dirty hands. I thought it was great between the harsh diagonals of the structure, a bit of warmth to such a cold exterior.
