banned

banned by Selavy Oh.
i've been banned for one day. ironically, the "scripted object" was not at all scripted to attack other avatars, but to self-repair. it was part of the self-repairing chain, an artwork for "Brooklyn Is Watching". a 'bug' in the physics engine of linden lab causes the chain to break from time to time, and the falling parts may then accidentally hit avatars at the sim.

I think it is interesting that it is possible for Linden Labs to ban your account permanently and with that erase your identity/you business/your hard work/your art/your "self"? for however long they choose to for whatever reason they like. I also think that eventually this will change, once people are more aware of what this means to their virtual identity and once they start pressing for more participation.

thanks, cayce, for your comment. the issue of 'ownership' and 'identity' is really very important, and it is basically unacceptable that a company providing a platform can erase all the work you've done using the platform. in terms of the good old medium, it is as if a company selling a canvas could take back the canvas together with the painting on it, just because the painting violates some guidelines of this company.

I don't think it was your chain they had a problem with, I think it was the previous work you did there. The tractor beam as Jay calls it, it was probbley someone who came to brooklyn is watching, just didn't get what the work was about and abuse reported you. I supect this may have been more than one abuse report, I think Jay did meantion on the podcast that some people had complained about it. I really hate the fact that someone who doesn't understand your art work can just AR you and it can be removed or you yourself can suspended or removed from second life itself.

ty, kumi, glad you like it! unfortunately, i don't know any lindens so far, and if it goes on like this, i don't know whether that'll ever happen.
@klink: the "attractive object" was sent back by auto-return about 6 hours before i was suspended. 40 minutes before being suspended, i got an IM by a resident asking: "is there some reason you hit me with scripted objects?"
that's why i think that, ironically, it was not the previous work.

Well I won't disgree with you there the Lindens do make some stupid decisions regarding abuse.

they certainly do. it was the chain, i know now for sure. it simply fell on someone's head, that gave about 20 hits from a scripted object. reason enough to be banned.

Sadly in reality the Lindens can't check all abuse reports so their solution is to shot first, which is plainly wrong. A few Lindens understand the purpose of Brooklyn Is Watching and maybe someone attached to 'Brooklyn' with more clout can say something to them!

Sorry you got banned, bad, bad move.

Selavy Oh  Pro User  says:

thanks dekka and gita. jay knows, and he wanted to take some action (see blog post at BiW). the problem is that this really threatens artists who work like me. in this case, it was a big misunderstanding. but if there are enough complaints about "aggressive" artwork (take gazira babeli's soup can!), they easily can ban me for ever, and erase all my work (see cayce's comment).
time to do some good documentation ...

Griefer!!!

oh that's both funny and absurd in a Kafkaesque sort of way. A real pain that you were banned for a day. It makes you wonder how knowledgeable some Lindens are about SL.

Gazira babeli's soup can is a treasure and would it would be sad day if people were dissuaded from creating objects like that or your work.

ok Gazira babeli's soup can has been mentioned several times now and I'm curious! is there any place where this marvelous soup can can be experienced? Or can anyone provide a vivid description?

case closed. linden lab's response below.

Hi there,

Thank you for the additional information relating to the recent incident. I've noted the details on your account. I've made a correction to your account so the suspension will not count against you in the future.

We now consider this matter closed.

Best regards,

Linden Lab and the Second Life Community team

kumi, gazira's soup can was shown at BiW for some time, but i'm pretty sure that you still can see it at her sim (locusolus). for a documentation, check gazira's web site here: www.gazirababeli.com/secondsoup.php.

Selavy, just for the record: I realize that this isn't your usual fare but I would be honored to be hit in the head by an object scripted by you.
