pilgrimage church, maria königin des friedens, neviges, germany

if the term roofscape was ever justified when describing a single building, it must be here: gottfried böhm's pilgrimage church in neviges, germany, one of his masterpieces from the 1960's.
the highly sculptural qualities of the building somewhat obscure the fact that the folded concrete roof is related to contemporary research by architects like jørn utzon, here.
this photo is the first from a tour of the structure.
the gottfried böhm set so far.
the böhm group, featuring the architecture of all three generations of böhm
architects.

Damn.
I lived just around the corner and sooo wanted to go before I went to SH but just procrastinated.
L., if you make it there I'd join you. But that would be around Christmas because I just missed going there on my last visit back home and that's the next time I'll be around.

here is a place that you guys missed on your köln-tour. Finally managed to have my wife upload some shots and I need to get out some PR for her......

great photos by your wife, especially the bienefeld ones.
I would like at some stage to hear your thoughts on böhm's housing schemes, but we should probably move that discussion to your wife's photostream.

Alright. So I'll get back home over Christmas and just confirmed with 8.59 cc to visit Neviges and probably the Gasometer in Oberhausen. It'll be end of the year so 29th, 30th or something.
If anybody wants to join, we'd be happy about some company!

I'd love to, but no go. We'll be far away, in southern germany. We promised the kids snow this year. It looks like the one time we drive away to go find snow, it is going to snow here.

I have been looking forward to your photo-essays of this crazy building and I am only now realizing that we sent two of the most self-critical minimalists and that we will be lucky to see anything at all :)

I loved the building very much but am actually not too excited about my photos of it.

I think it's an absolutely welcoming church. like an uterus, the only church of a bigger size which has a similar atmosphere to me is the cathedral of Girona (one of my favourites). Few windows, great interior space. I would have loved to get up to the gallery and take some photos there and I might go back there on a sunny day.

schromann gave us this quote:
"The jury clearly deplored the formal language of Böhm's design. They noted an 'over-escalation into the mannerist' and warned "residents and beholders will be forced into an artificial world.'"
in the discussion here.
