rødovre library, 1961-1969.
architect: arne jacobsen, 1902-1971.
inevitably, when you decide to do away with windows, your building becomes all about light.
in the library five open courtyards with all-glass facades, and one covered courtyard with a great clerestory window are combined with local perimeter skylights and the handsome combination of jacobsen's munkegaard lamps with round skylights.
the ceiling is a dark brown for contrast and the floors were originally covered with a light grey carpet for a soft, diffuse reflection of the skylights above.
much of the furnishings has been changed or moved about but in a spot like this, the intentions of the architect remain clear.
