holy moly!!! unreal, i've been through the panama canal, and it's tight in the locks, but this is unbelievable! is it real? if so, where is it? how do they keep it from bouncing off the walls? in the p. canal they have what they call "mules" they are trains that guide it through and prevent it from hitting the walls. wow, very nice pic, it's my desktop background for now. beautiful.
    love, lardee.

Beautiful photo. Did you know that it has designed and built a man which name it is Gerster and who was born in my city. I am proud of him. This canal is 6.3 kms long, 22 m width and deep only 4 m. It would be nice to see that in real. The best from Veronika

Thx all for your friendly comments.

@ lardee : I think the canal has been designed for avoiding ships to sail around the Peloponese peninsula, and nowadays, there are special ships among which the ship on the picture that have specially been designed to pass the canal.

@Veronika52 : Thank you for the information. I walked over the canal about 2 weeks ago, and asked my greek guide about the lenght and depth, but he could not answer me. I'll mail him the answer next ;-)
You could be very proud of Mr Gerster. He made a fantastic work, and I know for having my father working in civil construction (he was deeply involved in the Seikan Tunnel construction which is of 54 km long and going underneath the sea), that it is not an easy task to have this kind of work completed, although it seems relatively easy to just drill a straight line in the hill (and it's not). I am wondering where all the dig out material went.this should represent an enormous amount of earth and rocks!

@Kali187 : this is an HDR shot processed with photomatix. The blue color is of course not the blue color a human eye is able to see, but the result of the tone mapping made on the HDR image without much tuning. However, the water color has not been modified via ps alike soft.
