Street Performer at Times Square, New York City / 20091121.7D.00372.P1.L1.SQ.BW / SML
Street performers in New York have no class. "No money, no photos!" he said. This was seen everywhere as I walked around Times Square - a traditional tourism magnet in New York. If the city wishes to maintain a good image to travelers, it needs to do a better job at tackling this problem.
Good to know - and it's sad.

i think you lucked out, actually. you got a
far more interesting shot than if he let you
take his photo doing whatever type of
performance he was doing.

:) At least he didn't attack me. There was a
bunch of people with signs saying "Free
Hugs" - and when I tried to photograph
them, they were annoyed, ganged up (like 3 of
them) trying to kick my ass or something.
Very scary scene.

What? That last comment's story is
insane...violent Free Hugs people? I also
don't understand street musicians with this
sign in Central Park. It's Central Park! You
can't stop the shutterbugs there...maybe if
the sign asks nicely but they never do...Oh,
great shot BTW...

If you took this photo and didn't give the
street performer a donation - then you are a
thief. These people's livelyhood is having
their photo taken. NYC should have policemen
ticketing people who photograph street
performers without tipping! You took
something from this performer - you got his
photo. What did you give him in exchange? You
made him sad, you broke his spirit, you
ruined his day. NYC doesn't need people like
you.

Your point is interesting, though I don't
think that I agree.
Donation is just that: donation. If the
performer meant to be a business - say it
upfront. Put a sign somewhere - I would be
happy to oblige. It is bad for tourism if the
tourism board could not educate the street
performers the etiquette of having grace.
I'm glad that I'm not a tourist, as if I
were, the negative experience I have with New
York will do huge damage to the tourism
industry.

Yes, interesting points about tipping. My
personal rule is this: if I just snap one
photo, basically in passing, I generally move
on, but if I linger and watch the performer
and snap more than one photo, I will tip
them.

Right on! I didn't even watch his
'performance.' I just snap. I move on all too
quickly. Classic #adhd. :)
In fact, anyone who actually attract more
than a second of my time (enough for me to
snap 8 photos by then) usually are graceful -
I do interviews with them. Their stuff is way better than
any of these street performers. PR is
priceless - you can't buy them. Oh and
welcome to my Flickr stream that would make
you very Google-able!
Fast cash is just that, fast cash... sad.
Plus bad for tourism - I am somewhat involved
in the Hong Kong Tourism Association (by ways
that I cannot really talk about) and I am
really sensitive when little things like this
hurt the city beyond imaginable...
