::Photographer Bio::
John Raymond is primarily concerned with the inner worlds of everyday people. Instinctively drawn to the intersection of the real and the imagined, Raymond seeks to capture what he calls “the visual poetry of the mundane.” Focusing on subjects’ gesture and expression and incorporating environment and aesthetic principle, Raymond investigates the manifold ways our interior forces manifest in relationships, social structures and expressions of human potential. Through this effort he uses photography as an imperfect mirror with which we can examine ourselves, warts and all.
Accessible and simple on first glance, Raymond’s images are aesthetically, intellectually and emotionally layered. The richness of Raymond’s images is balanced by the humility and humanity of his enterprise. He seeks to engage, inspire and raise questions more than to instruct and profess.
Raymond counts his father, Magnum photographer Dennis Stock, as a key influence in his own development and work. Stock’s books, notably “California Trip”, introduced Raymond to refined principles of composition and lighting, to humor and to thoughtful and careful photography in general.
Raymond resides in Austin and hails from New York.
