Lucknow, India

Lucknow, India

It's hard to believe that Lucknow was one of the most culturally and architecturally advanced cities in the sub-continent. In the 17th century, the Moghuls had sent Nawabs to govern the city who then declared their independence and became rulers of the city. It was in that period that Lucknow enjoyed its glorious era which saw art, culture and the Nawabi architecture flourish. Lucknow became a city of culture, attracting poets, courtesans, scholars and nobility. Remnants of Mughal culture survived till about the mid 1800s when the British took over control of the city and that gave way to a decay and downfall of Lucknow.

Industrialization and the growth in population from the outlying regions have taken its toll on the city and although some of the beautiful monuments remind the city dwellers of the glory days, it must pain them to compare the city's present state with yesteryear.

This shot by the way is taken from near Chowk; the heart of the city and is a stitch of three different shots.
