Small problems aren't easy to fix

Small problems aren't easy to fix by Sedanman.
This is not typical of my usual flickr postings, and was taken for a group project protecting Puget Sound (see tags - It hasn't been accepted into the pool yet). I'm a car guy, as are many of my contacts, but am also concerned about the environment so please be constructive in your comments here as this is a real topic of concern that I take seriously. Thanks.

This is oil leakage (a couple of weeks worth) from my '96 Mercury Tracer, which I am about to sell. Obviously, it's not only very old cars that leak. I put the cardboard down to lessen runoff of the oil, but some still gets away.

As a former environmental educator who worked with the public on these issues, I feel somewhat guilty that I have a car that's polluting our groundwater. Unfortunately, leaks like this one are not easy to fix and would cost me the value of the car to get rid of. I've bought another car to replace this one, but someone else will buy this car from me, and probably not fix it or try and contain the leak.

This is a perfect example of how small environmental problems add up when you consider how many vehicles are on the road. Lots of small leaks mean a lot of pollution, but what can you do?

It's so true! I've never pulled into a parking lot or driveway that didn't have oil stains.

fix it...sorry it's the only way. the next owner probably won't do it and it'll continue to pollute. oil leaks in my experience are usually just gaskets. i just did my 76 Ranchero's oil pan, just felt too guilty leaving it.

I know, Eartha - the worst are apartment complex parking lots! The last car I had that leaked I kept a pan under, bu this car's too low.

Drive Design - I know it's the only way. I've already done the top end gaskets, but this is the bottom end - rear main (on a front wheel drive!) and oil pan gaskets are shot. This means removing a crossmember as well as the exhaust system, which is rusted in place and would have replaced if it were removed.

I've also not had the best of luck repairing leaks - especially rear mains. I think I've done the one on my Falcon 3 times (two different engines) and it still drips, as does the rebuilt trans with a new (as in no warped flanges) trans pan. Nobody can say I don't try hard!

Urgh, rear mains. Forgot about that, and the cars worth what, 2-3k, and letting the next owner deal with the leak will lower the selling price.

I don't know what it is about rear mains that they won't seal - I've tried different sealants, rotating the seal, etc. Even when I had my last escort's clutch done and main seal replaced at a shop, it leaked after about a year. This isn't from the Falcon, but a '96 Tracer that's worth about $800. Nobody's going fix this leak unless they do it them self, so that's why I'm selling low, as well as the car having a very slow radiator leak. Yeah, it's a polluter in all ways - if I didn't need the money my conscience would send it to a salvage yard.

No state/city buybacks in your area? San Francisco has a city byback policy...they'd pay 500 bucks for this and recycle it.

Not that I'm aware of - although I'd like to get $700 for the car, I'd take $500 to get it off the road for good.

So, I understand you were able to buy the Escort, the others didn't run off with it?

Something different as oil leakkages, but there is something that annoyed me very much during my visit to the States. I couldn't help noticing that almost everyone parking a car to wait for someone in a shop or just go out and buy something, leaves the engine running. Now, if that is needed for the A/C, OK, I can understand that. But I've seen it at night and at times A/C wasn't necessary, and with cars with windows open (so, no A/C on I suppose). It costs fuel and produces unnecessary CO2. I also noticed that the CO2 issue seems to be non existant in the US, never read about, it was never mentioned in car sales ads. Over here, it is even the law that in a car ad the CO2 emmission ratings should be mentioned.

Hi Martin - yeah, I got the Escort but my "newsfeed" has been slow since I've been so busy. I'll save info about that for another post when I have some photos to share. As for C02 levels, it's been over a year since I had to do an emissions test (it's every other year for even/odd year vehicles) so I don't really remember what things are checked for here.

But I agree - the leaving your car running while going into a convenience store is just plain ridiculous and I've never understood it. There's been more than one time that I've pulled up to see a car next to me idling with no driver, and have wanted to hop in the car and drive away - not to steal it, but to teach the owner a lesson!

In Texas, if you leave your car running and someone steals it, it's your fault that it got stolen and the insurance companies will not cover it. Leaving your keys in the car is considered an invitation to thieves.

As for emissions testing, we have to do it once a year.

Bat daddy - I'll bet Vampirella has lots of fluids too - probably twice as much as my Escort!

Brian - we've had that problem here in the winter when people are warming up their car in their driveway on cold mornings. I don't know if the insurance companies have decided against those claims, but they should against people who leave them running at the store!

Brian: in Texas if anything happens to your car, (for any reason) insurance companies will weasel out of paying you, then drop you like the vampiros they are...

Sedan Dude: Yepper, lots of freakin' fluids!...
