It seems to me that you people are like pro-lifers ... you don't want anyone else to have what you don't want. Instead of simply avoiding/blocking video, you require that other people go without it as well. That's unkind and cruel. What right do you have to enforce your will on the rest of us?

Well, video had been talked about since the very beginning, before the site even opened up for public signups, so I'm not sure where you got the idea that it should "stay specialized for photos" - is that your own idea or did someone at Flickr ever tell you that they intended to stay photo-only? And are you and the other anti-Video folks willing to pay back the hundreds of thousands of dollars that have been spent over the past 6 years on developing the ability to integrate video?

So, you are saying that even if you NEVER see the video, even if it has no impact on your Flickr experience at all, you don't want anyone else to have access to it either? Is that right? What a typically American opinion, as I can't imagine many people elsewhere in the world taking such an authoritarian POV.

Because it is different than the way you define Flickr, you demand that nobody else must have access to it either. Even if you can turn it off for yourself, you want to have control over everyone else's Flickr experience as well.

It DOES have impact, in fact it does have impact right now - upload-times are longer. And you don´t get it, right? Videos are just the beginning, than more and more stuff and nonsense is coming.
This should be a serious side for pictures only, where people who want a more profesional exchange of ideas and pictures can go. But with this start, it´s going to be a cattle market where everybody is putting his things. more and more rubbish.

With the absolutely enormous amount of photographic rubbish here (and non-photographic rubbish; Flickr has been open to animated GIFs, screenshots and illustration since the beginning as well, as the site is almost bogged down with a staggering amount of pornography), I can't imagine something as innocuous as adding the ability for SOME people to upload very short videos could possibly make a dent in the already vast amount of junk here.

I believe that if your attention was put into increasing the quality of all submissions on the site, rather than getting rid of a function that the thousands of people in the beta group found was tremendously useful and desirable, it would be far more effective.

So far, the videos I've seen on the site - maybe because of the amount of time necessary to produce them and get them up on the site - is better, on average, than most of the photographic detritus (i.e., the thousands of tilted-head headshots put up my teenage girls on MySpace and endless, unedited streams of personal snapshots) that fills up every nook and cranny of the site.

Of course there are temporary slowdowns now, just as there were when the software was integrated with Yahoo, or when tagging was added, or even back when registration was opened up to countries other than the US.

I just don't agree that adding video can possibly compete with the 90% crap we already have here. The fact is, nobody will upload even 1/50th as many videos as photos are uploaded, so it can never possibly, not in years, compete with the photographic junk. I think you need to pick your battles - if you really care about the quality of the content on the site, start where there's actually a lot of bad quality stuff: photos.
