They were a company that would take your money, do a series of background checks, and issue you a pass that granted you access to special "clear" lanes at the airport for express screening.

By applying for Clear, you gave this company carte blanche to know every detail about you. In return you got to go into the Clear lane. Looks like all that info on Clear clients is.....?where?

They already lost one laptop full of that data. No way I'd give all that info about myself to a company willingly. I always have a bunch of books in my carryon anyway.

So, I'm guessing none of you folks fly with any frequency. Since I have nothing in my past that is problematic, I was happy to have been an early adapter of Clear. It saved me 20-30 minutes each way on 2-3 trips thru airport security each month.

It's not the hiding things in your past, it's giving someone all your info and trusting they will keep it safe. Clear proved they couldn't do that and who knows where all the info of their members ended up. When they started loosing data people were trusting them with their membership tanked. Saving 20-30 minutes isn't worth my identity.

It was a private company. A friend of mine wrote about his experience:

"...I was under the impression I was dealing with a government initiative. As it turns out, Clear is a TSA-blessed private sector company/program that must negotiate space/service in each airport...

What happens to all that personally identifiable data? According to Clear:

When your account is canceled for any reason, we will remove your personal information from our system automatically after 90 days. There are some limited exceptions. Our credit card processors require us to retain a record of the financial transactions we conduct for 24 months. This includes your name, credit card number, address, and email address, so we can notify you if the financial transaction is disputed. Also, a copy of your biometric information (but not your name) is retained by the Transportation Security Clearinghouse to prevent fraudulent enrollments under alternate identities.

...Assuming the process works as described, some of my information will be removed."
