Me and the Tree

Me and the Tree by seamesse.
This is the tree I keep talking about, the one that's thought to be the oldest living maple tree in Ottawa. It's pretty hard to give a sense of its size, so I figured I could at least give a sense of *scale*.

I should probably point out that I'm 4'11" and a half, so you know. Think of your niece in Grade 6. :-)

The tree, like its children and grandchildren in the background, is now safe from the bulldozers. Thanks to the efforts of local citizens and community organizations, the land has been purchased by Canada's National Capital Commission and declared an environmentally sensitive area. Full story here on my blog.

How old do they figure this tree to be?

I've seen estimates between 250 and 400 years old. I'm not an expert, but it's probably possible to evaluate it without harming the tree -- there are several large broken limbs, and you could probably count the rings at one of the breaks.
