What a cool series. I think this might be a Falcon--perhaps a Merlin--rather than a Red-tailed Hawk.

I think you're right. I had red-tailed hawks on my mind, since that's what I usually see in this neighborhood, and it didn't occur to me that it could be anything else. I didn't realize that we had merlins in Toronto, but a little research suggests that they do show up fairly regularly. (See the Christmas Bird Count data here: data) Much cooler than a red-tail.
