Nice shot, great impact. As an aside what do you think the average age of that crowd is?

Agreed. I loved the message in the speech that ~ "lots of Europe thinks the US is part of the problem - but we need to work together to fix this"

...has to be viewed full-size to get the full impact.

This could serve both as a campaign poster and an ad for Canon.

Oddly, I'm reminded of another politics / digital camera story.

At the height of the dot.com boom, I was in a start-up based in Annapolis (where there's an unusual number of cyber-security personnel). We had a party, to celebrate our IPO, and I was milling-about awkwardly, when I felt a presence, behind me.

There, standing alone, except for me, was Bob Dole.

Wielding what social skills I could muster, I greeted him and smoothly executed a left-handed handshake. Not knowing quite what do do or say next, I pulled my brand-new Leica digital camera out of a pocket and asked if I could take a picture. He was fascinated by this device and wanted to know more about it. Before I could stop myself, I'd mentioned that it was made in Japan for a German company.

It's hard to say what his chuckle meant. He does that. Besides being gravely wounded in the second world war, Mr. Dole had been invited to speak to us, that night, about the Second World War Veterans Memorial. Luckily a crowd had formed, and I was able to simply back away.

I attended the crowd. Will write a blogpost on falklueke.com a little bit later, but my first impression of this picture is: maybe some think it's about the presidential candidate. But it looks a lot as it's a roadshow for all picture taking devices.... ;)

Does this look photoshopped to anyone other than me? Maybe people are really close together, but there doesn't seem to be proper perspective - the heads in the back look the same size as the ones in the front.

The narrow focal effect, that was not a wide angle lens. That's why.

It looks like the cover of Sgt Pepper's on a massive scale.

And little Obama in front, orchestrating.

It's a superb picture, I doubt if much Photoshopping could have been done, it appeared within a couple of hours of the speech.

As an expat american living in London for the last 8 years, it is just so heart-warming to see another American greeted in such a manner, particularly a presidential candidate.

In some ways I feel as if I've spent the last 8 years keeping a very low profile. Not exactly embarrassed about my homeland, but aware that no one really wanted anything from us and in particular our leadership.

So it's fabulous to imagine a time when people outside of America are once again interested in and excited by what our leaders have to say.

Copyrighted by whom? By yourself? Probably not. I cannot tell whether you are actually violation copyright by posting this here, Dave, perhaps you are doing so with permission. But at the very least it's a violation of the Flickr TOS ("Don’t upload anything that isn't yours."). Does nobody have a problem with that?

What does this express? A fully controlled media circus in which the voters are drilled animals?

I watched his speach on CNN, i liked it. But the images is what matters...

@metoc I dunno, those (Germans) aren't really voters. And by the number of cameras in the photo held by ordinary people I don't think that you can say that this is "controlled media" by any stretch.

And his speech is amazing. Must see streaming tv. Did he have no teleprompter?

Can you imagine being a McCain staffer and watching that speech... I can imagine a long sigh... and then what would you pin your hopes on?

I heard that the free concert by German Reggae star Patrice and the band Reamonn before the speech, and the free beer and brat...had nothing to do with the 20,000 or so folks Der Spiegel reported showing up. Nothing at all. His campaign takes some awesome campaign shots, too, no?.

Note the number of devices, cameras / video recording / even a laptop taking video. Interesting if anyone can spot a dictaphone or audio-only recording device.

Would also be interesting to know how many of those people share their content- flickr, facebook or other.

... the potential future is multiple in this photo!

I was surprised how many people of color there were, after all it's Germany, not the USA.

And I think the McC staffers know they're going to lose and are doing what they can to build their resumes for the next campaign.

It actually does look a little strange, unfocus a bit and then look at the color variations in the large size. It is kind of weird looking. I can't imagine that someone would try to photoshop this and then get away with it considering I heard it was on the WSJ front page.
