Uh. Wow. I mean, jeez. I'm sure -- hoping -- the story inside is related to the misconceptions, lies and general idiocy around terrorist fist jabbing, madrassas and all that. But ... holy crap. What kind of reaction -- diversion -- will this generate? Will it add anything substantial to informed political discourse or just corrode what's left?

Hi-freakin-larious. This encompasses all the insane things people have been saying about Obama. Personally, I find this extremely clever.

As long as they do a cover of john mccain listening to Artie Shaw and being senile, or so such equivalently silly cover that totally misrepresents mccain in a way with similar stereotypes that aren't true.

i have to say, i think a lot of people will misinterpret and think it's inflammatory.

Maybe it's meant to provoke discussion because something like 50% of people think Obama is muslim, and with discussion there is a chance at making them all realize he's not.

But if they wanted to go that route, provoke discussion, they should have gone a lot further so people would get it was a joke. Because right now, it's in line with what a lot of people think for real. It won't push those people to rethink at all.

Well, if you want to be realistic you cant ignore the obvious. Dont get me wrong Im not a hater, this picture will demand talk, and talk is what we need. Personally if I had the funding, political asperations or not, after 9/11, especially after 9/11, I believe I would have changed my name.

The cover is clearly meant as a mockery of the presumed beliefs of the "Right".

I mean it's obvious, isn't it?

So yeah, "So much for liberal media."

This cover is ripe for colorforms-style remixing of all of the signifiers.

Saul Steinberg's 1976 New Yorker cover "View of the World from 9th Avenue" inspired many works, including the poster for the movie "Moscow on the Hudson."

Oh please. I thought liberals were the masters of nuance.

From the New Yorker editor:
"The idea is to attack lies and misconceptions and distortions about the Obamas, and their background and their politics. We've heard all of this nonsense about how they're supposedly insufficently patriotic, or soft on terrorism," he said. "That somehow the fist bump is something that it's not. And we try to put all of these images in once cover, and to satirize and shine a really harsh light on something that could be incredibly damaging."

That REALLY sounds like someone who is carrying water for the Republican party. /sarcasm.
