Oy! I used to have a phone. Now I have a brick.
I did the upgrade to iPhone 2.0 and now my phone forgot its number, and everything but the ability to make emergency calls. Uchgh.

Seems like almost enough reason to call 911 :-)

Can't believe that iTunes has picked this day of all others to call in sick.

Glad I upgraded yesterday.

Bummer. It worked fine for me yesterday. It sounds like the activation servers aren't keeping up.
Seems like it should try again if you disconnect the phone (and maybe restart iTunes) and reconnect the phone.

I - like many are in the same boat. Pretty atrocious for Apple given their experience of last year. If you are going to hype a big one day roll out, you better have the resources to back it up. Note also that this is messing with their in store activation.

I had the same problem.
It's likely this is just a coincidence, but this recipe (from bit.ly/2R7Gdy) worked for me:
1. launch iphoto
2. launch itunes
3. connect phone
4. close iphoto
My iPhone is now restored. But my music, podcasts and videos are missing. And iTunes wants to connect to the iTunes Store (which it can't) before it sill let me sync!

Seems like Apple could use their own version of the Fail Whale.
images.scripting.com/archiveScriptingCom/2008 /07/11/apple...
And maybe this could be the last earth-shaking rollout. They're bullshit, these are just products, and people depend on them. To hold them sacrifice to Steve's pride or vanity or whatever causes them to try to do everything on one day for the whole fucking world.

In other words, no more pictures like this.

Thanks Apple.

You're lucky, my Nokia just carjacked a police van, shot a priest dead, and set a whale on fire.
It still has a working address book, though.

I guess Apple sleeps with the fishes too. :-(

Get the firmware off modmyifone.com and upgrade manually by shift-clicking on "Update" in iTunes.
