Rainy Queens street

This is a bus route sign. Why are they so high off the ground? It took me a *long* time to figure out why.

Look at the largest size of the pic for more detail. It's not necessary to solve the puzzle, but it might help you see how high off the ground the sign actually is. It's *quite* high.

Because the Bus Sign Commissioner had this friend in the pole warehousing business, and he said "Heeeeeeey... buddy.. those bus signs are OKAY .. but don't you think they should be 20 feet tall? Come on, help me out here.. I have all these poles.."

So you can't tag the sign with marker or spray paint, but more likely so that as the bus pulls up to the stop, you can compare the route number on the bus sign, with the route names and numbers on the sign (which looks like its about the same height as the sign on the front of a bus).

Maybe they are installed by really tall people.

So that the busses that pull under them don't hit them.

Ptone, I think it's the grafiti. New York got clever in dealing with it. You can see that other street signs which don't need to be seen from the top of a bus are at this height too.

When they installed them, they really thought we'd have flying cars by the year 2000.
