Three-pane view is key
If you want to mount a network drive peramanently, you have to do it from the 3-pane view in the Finder. For some reasons the other views don't have this power.

Probably better to call this "Columns" view. You can easily drag a Finder window out so it shows more than or less than three columns/panes.
