John Swinney, David Kerr and Michael Matheson (MSP) campaiging in Falkirk town centre for the Falkirk West by-election 22nd December, 2000.

 

This by-election was brought about by the resignation of the incumbent MP Dennis Canavan (Labour) who had held the seat since 1974. Despite a 16.5% swing to the SNP candidate David Kerr (7,787 votes ), Eric Joyce (8,492 votes) held the seat for Labour.
