As one of those behind the Mac, he deserves
it ;) Thanks for the Mac, and now enjoy your
iPhone ! PS: If you or somebody who knows you
happens to see this message : I'd like to
interview you for www.pomcast.com (we have about 100 000 downloads a month)
That guy with his Mac Paint program changed
my life. You think that Steve Jobs would hook
him up with an iPhone. I mean he did help
this little project called
"Macintosh" back in the early 80s.
Oh, man, the guy behind MacPaint! As Jake
also said, he changed my life. I did most of
the illustrations for Frank's and my first
book in MacPaint--printed them out on my
dot-matrix printer, shipped off this
"art" to WW Norton, and it's still
in print. The earliest version of my science
joke book started off as a photocopied
pamphlet whose "art" was MacPaint.
Simon and Schuster sprang for an actual
artist when they published it, tho.
And don't get me started on all the little
dot-matrix black and white
"stained-glass-windows" my two kids
made for me, some of which I still have.
Robert, thanks so much for this memory! Hope
you and Patrick have lots of fun with your
iPhone.
The awesome HyperCard was all his too.
Besides being great in its own right in
allowing millions of regular people to make
useful simple hyperlinked applications for
themselves (and it's *still* better than
Microsoft's ripoff, VB), it also is what
inspired Tim Berners-Lee to make the first
web server and browser.
And not only that! He also wrote the
QuickDraw graphics library that was so
ultra-optimized in hand-written assembler
that it allowed 8 MHz machines (everything
from the first Mac 128 through to the Mac
Plus and Mac SE and Classic) to run a
responsive GUI. The Mac would have been
impossible without him, at least at that
time.
Re: "It is a shame Bill Atkinson did not
receive an iPhone as a gift from Apple
!" Actually, he was offered a free
phone, but he waited in line anyway, because
he didn't want just one phone. I think he
bought 4 that day. (Apple had a limit of 2
per customer, but they waived that limit for
Bill.)

Before dithering, we made images on dot matrix printers using the Ascii character set - and that's no April fool! Thank you Bill Atkinson.
