SONY believes tape is history since the advent of MiniDisc

(I wonder how old this beer mat is)

You could digitize them :)

funny, isn't it already digital?!
what format is stored on a MD anyway ... can it simply be converted to mp3?
afaik a MD holds about 125mb, so the compression rate is very similar to a mid-quality mp3 ...
on this note: a interesting link for all geeks and nerds:

The audio data is stored using the ATRAC format developed by SONY; it uses a psychoacoustic model for data compression similar to AAC or MP3.

You could probably get the raw data from the MD using a special player, but then you would have to transcode it into an audio format that you could play on your comp, as ATRAC is proprietary and closed, and afaik there are no software ATRAC decoders/players.

So I think the best way is to just play the MDs and record the audio to harddisk. Which is going to take ages :)

(I have a similar problem here; I have a synth with a built-in sequencer that I used to record a couple of hundred songs, about 30 hours worth of music. Unfortunately, the sequencer uses a proprietary format developed by Yamaha which is incompatible to MIDI, and they are not going to release the specs (I've asked) and there is no software that can convert the stuff to MIDI. I wanna sell the synth but want to capture the songs beforehand. I've already recorded most of the songs to audio (which took ages!) but I still want the sequencer data. It looks like I am going to have to play each song and record the MIDI data sent by the synth to sequencer software in the Mac. To hell with proprietary and closed formats. I hope people (the industry) are finally going to learn.)

SONY still uses ATRAC for lots (all?) of their portable players and even car radio but it looks like they are going to abandon it soon.

As usual, the Wikipedia has all the gory details:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATRAC

Thanks for the cool links!! I think I've seen the vintage electronics thing before, it's brilliant! And the lost formats is amazing, too; I've never even heard of some of those formats!

i knew i would get an answer here, but unfortunately no solution.
I've got better and more interesting things to do and to play with than spending my entire annual leave to transfer my MD collection in real time to mp3/ACC ... I guess I'll just have to hope that my MD player has survived the past 5 years on my parents attic without damage.

... I guess I'll give last.fm a go -- even though the use of internet radio needs to be limited here. in my office and at home we only have 12GB (+24 off peak) per month. that sux!

Yeah, thus beer mats are cool. I would be quite happy if I find something like that.

I doubt it very much. But you could keep it and care for it and people will admire it in about 20 years for its historic value.
