자일, 어떻게 지은 이름인지는 모르겠지만, 어감이 아주아주아주 좋은 이름은 아닌듯 합니다. 굳이 등산용 '자일'의 의미때문만이 아니고요.

'자'발음이 좀 문제인듯 한데요, 각각의 한글 자소가 어떤 의미를 가지고 있지는 아니지만 나름대로의 소리가 주는 '뉘앙스'가 있는건 사실입니다. '재일'이나 '주일'보다 '조일'이나 '자일'은 참 낮설게 들리고 흔하지 않아보이네요.

뭐 하지만 누가 놀릴만한 이름은 아니니까 걱정하실것까지는 없을듯하네요.^^ 예) 최고봉, 정부미, 오재미, 윤활유, 모가지, 박치기......등등.

아기가 참 통통하니 이쁘네요. 축하드립니다.

Daffies & snowdrops are flowering here,& trees just breaking into blossom....the grey squirrels waking up in the woods...are hungry & attacking my Magnolia buds for food...I was so MAD this morning..I went out & chucked my slippers at them ! They just shifted up a branch or two, and gave me the equivalent of two fingers ! It has been warm here,but bad/cold weather is on the way. Aunty Maggie is coming up tomorrow (with Aunty Barb & Uncle John) staying the night,& then leaving Sunday morning for Balmoral ,Scotland)...they will need thermal underwear ,if the forecast is right.

She (Aunty Mags) ' thinks' .... it will be 'doddle' coming North.
5 hours from Essex to me,stay the night, & 6/7/8 hours journey to the
Highlands...I think not !

@Auntie Lynne: Very glad you like the name. We've been struggling to come up with a Korean spelling of it that doesn't make people giggle but I think we might be there. Your garden sounds lovely as always, you're so fortunate to live in such a green and pleasant environment.

저는.... 일단 듣기에 아주 좋은 이름은 아니라는 생각입니다.

사실 이름에 관심 많은데요, 그래서 어쩌다 지으신 이름인지 궁금합니다.

한국인 여성과 외국인 남성 사이에 낳은 아이 중에서 한국 이름이 한국이름답지 않은 경우 많이 보게 되는데, 이는 보통 외국명과 한국명을 가깝게 소리나게 하려고 하다보니까 다소 이국적인 이름을 짓게 되어서인 것 같습니다. '김자일'하면 제가 지금까지 본 아주 심한 경우에 비해 이국적이진 않지만 그렇게 지은 의도가 뭐였냐고 묻는 사람이 계속 있을 것이라고 생각합니다. 그리고 외국명에 가깝게 지으려고 그러셨다고 하셨을 때엔 '아, 그 집에서는 아들의 외국명을 우선시했다'고, '단일민족' 신화에서 겨우 벗어나려는 한국사회, 그놈의 '우리 정서'가 획일적인 것이고 '국적불명' 이 욕이 되는 한국사회에서 이름 때문에 아드님에 대해 선입견을 갖는 이들이 있을 수 있겠습니다. 한편 다음 세대는 벌써부터 예명같은 이름을 (본명으로) 가진 아이가 많은 만큼 '지금은' 약간 이국적이더라도 나중에 오히려 개성이 있다는 평을 들을 수도 있을 같기도 하네요.

무엇보다 유행을 타는 이름을 피하는 게 좋습니다. '영자' '영숙' 등과 같은 이름도 50년 전엔 신선하고 새로운 느낌을 줬을 거예요.

참고로 저의 딸 이름을 '빛결'이라고 지었는데, 소리내어 부르기가 힘들어 부를 땐 '결이야'라고 부릅니다. 나름대로 생각이 있어서 지었는데 본인이 이름이 이쁘다는 칭찬도 듣고 스스로 이름이 특별하다는 것에 대해 자부심을 느끼는 것 같아 비로소 안도의 한숨을 쉬게 되었습니ㅏㄷ. 처음에는 주변 이들 중 뭐라고 하는 이들이 있었으나 지금은 모두 좋다고 합니다.

하여간... 이름이란 것은 처음엔 좀 이상하더라도 쓰다보면 자연스럽게 느껴지고 그 사람과 잘 어울리는 것으로 느껴지게 된다고 생각합니다.
