Keep Marriage Gay.

Keep Marriage Gay. by SaylaMarz.
Watch this.

Just a few short months after legalizing gay marriage, California has a new ballot measure out there to undermine the ruling, and permanently alter the California Constitution, to add in discrimination and hatred.

The reasons? Apparently allowing gay people to legally acknowledge their love and receive the 1,138 benefits of marriage will somehow unmarry all the straight homophobes out there. Apparently including homosexuality in safe sex discussions will turn children into buggers. Apparently allowing gay people to adopt children will catalyze the coming apocalypse. As it turns out, allowing gay people to be treated as equal citizens will take away straight people's rights and turn the whole country into a slathering mass of hateful homos.

Think that's bullshit? Think gay and lesbian couples should be able to marry?

Vote NO on California's Proposition 8!

At one time, blacks and whites couldn't marry. Hindus, Sihks, Shinto etc... neither. The century before last, Jews couldn't sit in Parliment and Natives couldn't vote until the 1960's.

The laws were vile and indefensible then, and the anti-gay laws are today. Here's hoping the the dinosaurs keep headed towards extinction.

They ran a similar measure in 2004, and it passed. But the courts informed them that they can't use "Majority Rule" to sweep away a constitutional right.

So ... this time, they're changing the State Constitution so that will be that.

Personally, I don't think that the constitution should be open for referendum. It's just too willy nilly of a process, and it will get soooo screwed up if we leave knee-jerk amateurs in charge. Laws are one thing, the constitution is totally another.

Thanks, Brigid, for reaching down across the state line for this. This really hits a nerve for me.

if the anti gay marriage people care so frigging much, they'd probably have indoctrinated their kids with hate before they even reach school age anyway!

GAH. it's all so absurd.

I have never commented flickr art, but now I have too: Your "Keep Marriage Gay" piece is simple and excellent - both in words and art. Believe it or not, however, it may too sophisticated for some of the people who should vote "no" on 8. So, please do one with less poetic language next week.

I have followed your photostream on and off for a long time, and I think you are one of the most insightful people and one of the best artists out there. On a side note: Saw Presidential VP candidate Joe Biden on Ellen the other day, who said very clearly, that if he lived in Cali, he would vote NO on prop 8, and he said the same for Obama, and that they disagree with the whole thing. Woot!!

This is a beautiful drawing (and well done) and this whole thing is really making me ill. I am so saddened by it and just hope that people wake up soon!

I just read a great kid's story to the baby I watch 4 days a week, called ...And Tango Makes Three ...based on a true story about two male penguins who came together at the Central Park Zoo for 6 years. They were observed treating a rock like an egg and the zookeeper gave them a second egg from a mixed couple to raise. They did and she was named Tango by the zookeepers and they raised her as a family.

I'm sure the penguins didn't look around and think "I'm gonna choose another male." It just happened.

pecunium  Pro User  says:

Actually, the initiative (an attempt to amend the Constitution) was proposed well before the ruling. Like Prop 22 (six years ago) it was an attempt to bring out the base.

The Republicans expected to lose Calif. to whomever the Dems put up, but they expected a number of competitve races, down-ticket, and figured this (which was, at the time, merely re-inforcing two, redundnant, laws) was a cheap way to get people who might have decided there wasn't anything important on the ballot to turn out.

It was a cynical ploy, which became relevant (and they sued, in a faled attempt to get the description on the ballot changed. They thougt, "An Amendment to deny same sex couples the right to marry." was unfair. The SecState said (and the courts agreed) "that's what it does, so that's how it's described).

It's tight. the No on 8 people seem to have been a trifle complacent, and the Mormons have been pouring out of state money into the race.

I am looking forward to voting NO on 8. I still can't even believe this is an issue. And for the record, even my TEN YEAR OLD thinks the commercials of the school issue are "lame". We've always been really open and honest with her about our support for gay rights and she was confused because this commercial was suddenly trying to teach her that something we had always taught her was NORMAL was suddenly so wrong.

Silly homophobes.

ammar... what in God's name are you talking about. put down the crack pipe and walk away.

Adjen... I don't know how a person spoke changes the words he said. But here is the question and answer word for word.
Gwen: “let’s try to avoid nuance, Senator. Do you support gay marriage?”

Biden: “NO, Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that. That is basically a decision to be left to the faiths and people who practice their faiths to make a determination on what you call it. The bottom line though is, and I’m glad to hear the governor, I take her at her word, obviously, that she thinks there should be no civil rights distinction, none what-so-ever, between a committed gay couple and a committed heterosexual couple. If that’s the case, we really don’t have a difference.”

So was he lying during the debate or during the Ellen interview?

Please don’t anyone get me wrong, I want gay marriage, I want equal rights. I fought to bring my boyfriend to prom in a small town back in the mid 80’s when it wasn’t popular to do so. I know what this fight is about and I know when people are pandering to the crowd they are in front of.

GreyRaven  Pro User  says:

Prairi- my interpretation of that quote is that 'allowing 'a marriage between two same sex individuals has often been misconstrued with changing the definition of marriage. it doesn't. They don't want to change 'marriage', and instead feel that the faith of those involved should make the call of whether or not that union is accepted, rather than having it be a governmental matter. Those of us who do not prescribe to a recognized religion would still have the legal and recognized right to marry our partners with the same rights and constructs as everyone else.
In short, they are opposed to redefining marriage but supportive of allowing all Americans to marry their partners regardless of sex, creed or color.

prairiearth  Pro User  says:

That's a good observation Grey, but we are fighting for the legal right to marry. Both parties can hide behind the definition of the word or what church you should have your ceremony in. but the right to be seen and recognized as equal under the law. I guess I'm trying to say that both have the same opinion so it should really be taken out of the equation.

GreyRaven  Pro User  says:

I think I'm reading you wrong, but I keep coming back around to you're saying what they're saying. Don't change the meaning, and everyone should be allowed to legally marry. I think that universal legal recognition is where the government is concerned, and religious bodies feel that marriage is solely a religious thing and therefore should be in their hands. There's an argument about whether or not one can accept while the other denies - like having a marriage that is only recognized in one state but not in another in the same country.

I think the terminology throws me a lot. "gay marriage, "gay" rights - whatever happened to happy simple "human" rights? Thus, my interpretation of Biden's comment (as quoted by you) reflects my own objection to the term (not objection to the subject! I am a huge proponent of marriage) in that it implies it is a separate entity when it should just be the late correction of the original.
