Vote Early, Vote Often.

Vote Early, Vote Often. by SaylaMarz.
The election is in two weeks.

According to The Charleston Gazette early voters are already experiencing voting fraud. Voters in Jackson County are reporting touch screen ballots literally flipping their votes from "Obama" to "McCain."

Please be pro-active about voting, and vote early. By voting early, you can help catch any machine "malfunctions" before the masses of voters arrive on November 4th. If you spot a machine malfunction, you can ask your poll workers to spend as much time as you need fixing the problem. You will not have the same luxury on November 4th!

Many voting machines will present a review of your selections when you have finished voting. Please review your summary carefully to assure that your votes went where you think they went.

In many areas, voters will be given the choice between a touch screen voting machine, and a paper ballot. Request a paper ballot!

A touch screen can be insensitive, miscallibrated, or tampered with electronically. You trust your own eyes, and you trust your own hands.

Vote early.

Vote on paper.

And vote carefully.

You can locate a place to vote early on voteforchange.com - look for the Early Vote link at the top of the screen.

2000 and 2004 all over again. The question is, who is in charge of the data on these machines?
It seems the election process lately is just to pacify us, who knows if our vote REALLY counts.

Voted by mail in San Mateo County, CA. Paper ballot. Ink bleeds through. Who knows, you might get the presidential vote in the county.
Seriously, I do share your concern about the election being stolen.

I can't believe USA still uses electronic voting, after what has happened in the past! I know paper votes seem prehistoric to some of you, but i will crack it if the Australian government ever tries to get rid of it!

So I have a question that I've always sort of wondered about.

Why are paper ballots always considered to be so much more reliable? Is it just that in the even of suspicion, you can go back and do a hanging-chad recount? I guess that's it, right? I mean, if you're going to cheat, you could program the scanning machines to cheat just as easily as you could program the electronic ones to cheat (I would assume).

Blah...it all just makes me sick. I swear, if this thing gets stolen...!!! GRRRRRR

People can always ask a recount on paper - but if the votes are tampered with electronically as they are taken in, you can't really prove that it was anything different to begin with. And on paper you can absolutely see your own vote, whereas electronically, it disappears into wires and networking.

d.rex, like any good automated process, optical scanners are subject to human quality assurance. Small but statistically significant batches of ballots are counted by hand. If machine-counted votes are out of proportion, there's a problem.

As a side note, many people don't realize that they can be turned away from the polls because they are "campaigning in the polling area" because they are wearing buttons or t-shirts that emphasize voting for a specific candidate or party. I'd advise everyone to keep that in mind before heading to the long lines of the polling place.

I think your shirt is well done B. But I wonder if Obama would like to see himself as a super hero. It kinda freaks me out if he does. Like... I guess it would just feed my belief that he's cocky. If one man truly believes he can save the world.. and starts promoting peace and perfection.. (we're not talking the 2nd coming here..) then we're all in a lot of trouble. Obama will make Americans more likable to the world, that's great. But I certainly hope it isn't his belief that he's a hero. The only thing that will save us from our economic failure is better use of our own money.. no credit cards so we can have it the moment we want it, but saving for things we want and getting them when we can afford them. No President can save us from ourselves.

All that being said... do you think Obama would like that shirt? (Like I said, I think it's cool in the fact that it's so well done - And it's a neat concept when I ignore the fact that the man on that shirt could very well be our next President. And for the record, I wouldn't like any candidate on that shirt. Plus, it just wouldn't work with McCain's face.)

That is a great shirt; and as one who's been trying to point out the problems in our voting machines for years, from the computer security end, I'm so flipping glad that people are paying attention, finally- and not just a bunch of techno-geeks, this is a major problem all over and people don't seem to care. I get so, so many blank looks, and "So what?", it's enough to make you cry.

The last I heard on the subject was that you can wear a button or shirt in support of your candidate of choice as long as you are not calling undue attention to yourself and don't hang around the area like a walking billboard. If you're just going in to vote and leave you should be ok.

LOL it's a shirt by a popular comic book artist, Alex Ross, not one that was released by the Obama campaign. I doubt Obama would suggest selling himself as Superman, but he seems to have a sense of humor, so I imagine he might be amused at it.

I don't think Obama is egotistical at all, I think he's empowered - he believes that one person can truly make a difference if he works hard enough. But he doesn't just think that he has that power, but that anyone does. That's the whole thrust of his campaign: Yes We Can.

So even if you disagree with the specifics of his politics, he's still encouraging you to get out and make the changes in the world that you want to make.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you though - what would be wrong with someone promoting peace and perfection? They seem like the best goals a person can strive for! I would think you would agree with him there!!

We've used touch screens in my area since before I could vote (not saying much, as I'm only 21).
We see a print out of our ballot under a piece of glass before we hit finalize. Once we hit finalize, the paper is put into a safe below.

Is this how everyone's machines are? I don't have a big problem with it, as I can see the print out.

I do understand what you are saying, I'm just used to the machine...

Oh there's nothing wrong with promoting peace and perfection at all!! (This part will likely sound silly to you, but it'll explain me a little.) But... biblically speaking, the antichrist is a person who will appear to be this awesome person. He'll talk about peace and make all these promises that sound so amazing. He'll probably even appear to DO amazing things.. imitating Christ's miracles (but not replicating them). He'll claim to be Christ... to have the answer to all our problems and issues.
I don't think Obama is the antichrist, but I guess I'm just weary of people who make promises they can't and won't keep (like nearly every politician I've ever come across).. you know ? I have no doubt that Obama will change the world, whether he's elected our next Prez. or not. He already has!! And I guess I do appreciate his effort to have *everyone* vote... and how he has offered the ability to register from his site.. that kind of thing.. "for the common good" type stuff.
But putting his face on a Superhero body in America is like... similar to all the face flags that once flew of all the "bad guys" America has fought against.. you know? The terrorist leaders.. dictators. Saddam Hussain, Adolf Hitler. Osama bin Laden. Those people had (or have) their faces EVERYWHERE.. flags and posters and tee-shirts and everywhere. America is so commercialized.. that I guess I make this connection.. American political leader face on superhero body = dictator face on flags and huge posters. It's just what my brain is doing... (When 9-11 happened and so many Americans started flying the flag... Germans became weary because the last time THEY saw a ton of flags being flown so pridefully was during the Nazi domination and the swastika was all over the place. There was nothing wrong with us flying our flag.. but the connection their brain made was negative. I think that's what my brain is doing.) I hope some of that makes sense.

Kathy Sierra (RIP) wrote a wonderful blog post a few years ago, If some people don't HATE your product, it's mediocre.

She gave as her example the Head First series of books that she was involved with, but another example would be pretty much anything created by Apple.

I suspect Obama is another example of that. He doesn't appear to be a typical politician. He stands out from the crowd. As a result, some people love him, others hate him.

To some extent I think it's just human nature, whenever we see someone really, really excited about something that doesn't excite us, for us to subconsciously begin finding reasons to like the thing even less than we would have otherwise. I've no idea why that is.

Personally, I think Obama will be exactly the right kind of president for the challenges our country will face over the next few years.

Step 1: Clean up the messes created by the previous tenant.

Sounds like you're lucky. Not all touch screen systems have a visual review, muchless a paper printout. Paper prints are one of the big points of contention with these machines.

I get the connections you're making, but basically the argument hinges on distrust and association. Communist and Fascist fetishization of icons of leaders was forced by the leaders - people choosing to buy interesting buttons and apparel to make their political inclinations known isn't a sign of tyrany, so much as effective promotion.

And what if Obama really will do everything in his power to make the world so much better? Worst case scenario, he's just another politician.....But if he really is everything he strives to be....we have a chance at a better world.

I think at the core, his values are values shared by everyone. Peace. Fairness. Equality. Moderation. Hope.

He's making efforts to work beyond political party lines, to accomplish mutual goals. From his DNC speech:

"We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country.

The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals.

I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in a hospital and to live lives free of discrimination.

You know, passions may fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers."

One of his strongest qualities is that rather than wasting time fighting about huge supreme court decisions, he's looking for the moderate changes that we can make, that will begin to address the problems, even as we as a culture are still grappling with the larger solutions.

If there was no unwanted pregnancy, there would be no abortion. So why not address that first? If some firearms are important for personal safety and foodsources, why not look first at those firearms used specifically for gang violence and guerilla violence?

You might not agree with his "ideal" politics, but ideals never come to pass, when a culture is under such a division. Issues of abortion and gay marriage are too large for one person to solve - they require time and growth as a culture. It's the country, not it's leader, that will make these huge decisions.

I do think you'd support the changes that he realistically believes we as a country can band together and make real.

haha that was going to be a short answer, I swear.
