Anandwan, which is now a grampanchayat, could very well win the "model village" award...its so clean, spic and span and well maintained...

Anandwan was founded in 1949 by Baba Amte, to better the plight of the marginalized leprosy patients and people with disabilities through treatment, training and active inducement in self managed communes.
Once considered a burden and discarded by society, Anandwan's underpriveleged inhabitants are a testimony to human grit and perseverence. Their self sufficienct communes hold you in awe. Everyone earns his bread with honest labour, no matter what the disability or handicap.

Seen here is a near-blind Anandwan resident at work, knitting a chair cushion. Everywhere in Anandwan, you come across people with severe disabilities toiling in looms, machine shops and in farms. It's a spectacle that everyone should witness atleast once in his or her lifetime.
