The Marques
Tio Zeca's wedding (1975)
There's such a story to this photo of my mother's youngest brother's wedding, held in my grandparents' quinta, outside Braga, Portugal - my grandparents sit on the steps in the foreground.
1975 - one year after Portugal's independence from Salazar-styled fascism; colonial independence wars in their final stages. Only half of the Marques, my maternal family (once eleven brothers and three sisters...now somewhat diminished) are present. Most of my uncles in this photo had just returned from Angola or Mozambique. Some uncles continued in Angola, one had emigrated to Switzerland, one to the USSR, another (a Portuguese air force pilot) had been killed when his plane fell inexplicably into the Atlantic. Hence, a rather sad day, which is why we're all looking very 70s cool but rather morose.
The mafiosi character in the cream suit and shades in the extreme right is my papa, Zé Vieira, in one of his rare Marques family appearances. My mother stands behind him, with me, aged two, in her arms.

Lu-Do, Ivor Cutler, 1967
A total enfringement of copyright, but I like to think of it as free promotion: If you haven't heard Ivor Cutler before, give him a try: Ivor Cutler on Spotify: open.spotify.com/artist/60SKMJ5AgD6DuxTNbVrrSQ |
I wanted to add this to 'dreams' set, you see. |
It's also featured in the 'i am a brave girl captain' on FuturePresent.
