solrena, this one doesn't give me the creeps, it's the one that is still in the house that's freaking me out....

mjd-s, poor puppy. totally traumatized!

kirida, i'm not sure. less than a hundred. but i've probably killed (or my dogs have killed) at least 30.

I honesty think I would have a heart attack if I saw a snake in my house. You are very brave! :)

crunchcandy and sugarfreak, i think the thing was a little over 3 feet long, but dying already--you can tell with how skinny and dark it is. if it was healthy, it would fatter and lighter in colour.

miss martini, it's a brown tree snake, and a HUUUUUUGE problem on the island. "ecological disaster" is not understating it--most of the native bird population is gone. many younger people i know have never seen the snakes, so they don't believe it's a problem; this "seeing not believing" attitude is also a problem. for me anyway.

bees and sticks, as long as they don't drop on my head....BLAAAAAARRGHHH! i can't just let it go because it's not a native species, it's invasive and has decimated the bird population on island. so i've learned how to deal. sorta. some snake moments are better than others. believe me, i'm far more brave when all i have to do is run over them with my car!

OMG I saw a documentary about how there are almost no birds left in Guam because of all the snakes. I have since refused to travel to Guam because I am petrified of snakes. Hubby thinks I'm over-reacting. wait till I show him this photo.

lynn (laughing), no worries, you won't see them in the tourist areas. or in the commercial areas. just in my house, apparently :)

The ecological disaster sounds bad - but I'm used of these types of brown snakes back home - which seem a lot scarier....

eep. no, seriously, i heart australia, but with snakes like that and the ones eating family pets, i'm very grateful just to have to deal with these relatively little critters.
