mango koolickle

you've seen the koolickle, right? i made my own version with green mangoes, tropical punch kool-aid®, vinegar, sugar, and li hing mui powder. sweet, sour, fruity, li hing muiey, and really, really, red.

i don't think they have this in hawaii, but it has all the elements of favourite hawaiian snacks--fruit punch, mango, li hing mui, red pickled mango....why not put it all together? totally ono.

This seems to make more sense than the other koolickle.

I need a glossary so I can look up things like li hing mui.

neil, added! is this real food? really?

hi miss bunch! i actually am not quite sure exactly what li hing mui is. it's a preserved plum with licorice flavour, salty, sweet, and sometimes bright red....weirdly, i think they intensify the flavours by adding artificial sweetner to it. it is sometimes eaten as is acrack seed, sometimes added as an ingredient, whole, or in powdered form. i used powder for this.

      aJ--it is! you'll like it!

chef, me too. i like it on mango best, but almost anything will work for me.

!!! things in life, indeed, happen in waves! I just heard of li hing mui powder for the first time ever in my life last week from one of my students who is Hawaiian! We were reading a story about apples and she told me how much she loved dipping apples in li hing mui powder and i was like, "waaaa?" so I looked it up and found a bar down the street from where i work makes a special rum drink rimmed with....wait for it....wait for it.....li hing mui powder!!

NO! And I'm afraid if I don't have it in the next 4 weeks (I am moving to small-town PA then small-town AZ) I will have missed my window. I am trying to gather friends to go to that bar.

finally had it today. my student brought me "seed." the white was way too strong but I liked the red. the only thing I didn't like was that instead of using sugar it tasted like aspartame, which i am not a huge fan of.
