bowhaus unearthed the roman version. this is a relatively new phenomenon for the point, so i imagine japanese couples got a hold of the novel that started this whole "love padlock" thing and it got translated to this. however, there were a few locks here for a long while, so....maybe a bunch of italians got here first.
