staff house at newington children's hospital (abandoned)

staff house at newington children's hospital (abandoned) by sandcastlematt.
Staff House at Newington Children's Hosptal. Abandoned and boarded up some time ago.

Update, 3/27/08: it was demolished sometime this winter. By Easter, just a pile of dirt and debris.

Yep, I bet it's haunted by the voices of a thousand children. Very creepy indeed.

Just as I was taking this photo, a guy drove up and told me flatly that "its not haunted." I'm not convinced - anything with this much history in it...

i certainly see the resemblance - perhaps from the same era? The guy who said this building wasn't haunted also informed me it was made in the '20s, but I'm not sure.

Cool shot! I helped a buddy film a movie for a high school media class in this building. There's some cool stuff in there. :)

hey thanks. I was advised (by the guy who drove up to me) that no ones allowed inside and that there's security cameras monitoring the whole area. I would have loved to check out the interior - you should post some shots if you have any.

thanks - I did try converting it to b&w, sepia, etc, and its basically just looks older but doesn't improve the contrast.

Hey Gang, this picture is of the original Staff House at Newington Children's Hospital. I hate to burst your bubble, but no children were ever in this building. There aren't any screams or boogeymen here. It was a dormitory for nurses and therapists. The buildings that were used when it was called "Newington Home for Crippled Children" are still being used today as an office building.

Thanks so much for stopping by and clarifying. I had the hardest time finding reliable information to ID this building - my inlaws who are local to Newington told me it was an abandoned mental hospital; glad i didn't go with that. Google mainly sent me to haunted house discussion boards that were horribly contradictory. Well, glad you showed up - will change the description accordingly.
Even if it was *just* a dormitory - which is kind of interesting in its own right - I still think its kind of creepy looking. Any clue as to why it still stands - are there are plans to rehabilitate it?

Actually, a lot of groups have looked at it over the years for renovation, but at this point - unfortunately - it's scheduled for demolition. The slate is falling off the roof and the mortar has loosened so the bricks are falling as well. Very sad because it is - or was - a beautiful building in its day.

Sorry to say guys, but the structure is gone. I stopped by on Saturday, and found nothing but piles of dirt and debris - just one floor of the basement wall creeping through is the only evidence a building ever stood there. There is a pretty cool excavator on the site, however:

This is not a picture of Newington Children's Hospital. This is the staff housing unit. The actual hospital building was dedicated to Dr. Curtis, who watched me grow into adulthood. I spent many hours in the hospital before it's closing and I can assure you that it is not "haunted by the voices of thousands of children." Childrens' lives were saved in that hospital. Children were given rays of sunshine and hope due to the staff that was dedicated to helping children.

Yes, the building in this particular picture has been demolished, though the actual hospital still remains as do memories of many due to the dedication of its former staff.

Before speaking so negatively, think first. In some respects, I was saved by the staff at this hospital.

Stories like the ones above are the ones that keep me shooting photos of abandoned hospitals and asylums. Sure there were dark moments but so many places gave so many people hope! They gave so many folks a chance to step out into the world again and embrace life with open arms.

Abandoned hospitals are not scary.
Much love you for sharing your story!
Thank you!

The building shown was erected in 1913, and was one of several constructed to house up to 120 children and the requisite staff of the newly-named hospital.
I was a patient there in 1956. Unfortunately, I was mis-diagnosed and put in braces which contributed to the fragility of my legs. I don't hold that against anyone, except that back then there were still some fairly brutal procedures being done, hard to shake even after 60 years.
Thanks for your picture! Wish I could have seen the real thing too, but your picture gets the point nicely.

I live close by this place, have a history book on it, and pass it at least twice daily. This building and hospital were historic as being of the first children's hospital to care for "crippled" children. Then NY Govenor Franklin Roosevelt dedicated a new building (1930) for the Children's hospital in a speech given from this very building on a beautiful porch (opposite side from pic) to a large crowd assembled on the sloped lawn below it (the land is not seen in the picture, but was a large sloping beautiful lawn then) Roosevelt was already crippled by Polio and his dedication had much meaning. As was said earlier, this was not a scary, haunted place, none of this hospital was. It was a place of hope, caring, love, and the laughter of very ill children. Shared support by concerned staff. This place is a monument to human love, and nothing less. And yes, sadly it was let go and demolished about a year ago 2008 (11/2009)
(PS: there stands a nearly identical building - still in use - built the same year by the same construction firm at the Quabbin Reservoir in Belchertown Mass. (again, its an adminstrative building but has a public visitors center- so u can go in) You can see what the inside looked like, nothing spectacular, very utilitarian.
