islands in the sky (Revere #1)

islands in the sky (Revere #1) by sandcastlematt.
Melissa suggested the title. Can you see the seagull? This sandcastle was massive!
...ok ok, it was barely knee high and only took a couple hours to make. But I love that it looks so huge in this photo.

That is insanely cool... built on driftwood again?
It reminds me more of a drawbridge.. if I ignore the middle sections.

thanks Ari - yeah - made it with some driftwood and fishing line I found on Revere Beach this afternoon. Ignore the middle part?! That was the hardest part - had to redo it constantly once the wind picked up.

Ya, it looked like the toughest section...

it just looks like a drawbridge, or actually, like the old types that would raise and lower for boats, if the middle part is ignored.
I LIKE that part though!

Well, this one seems to have caught a few people by surprise today/last night - thanks to all 23 of you for such nice and interesting comments. This photo was a lot of fun to take - since the castle was relatively easy to make I got to roll around in the sand for too long to admit, finding odd perspectives to snap. My camera is still coughing up sand...

Niddler - love your suggestion for a title; made me laught alot.

Elgeko: never been complemented on DOF before -this is going to my head!

Dancing Fish: The weight isn't a problem, its the fishing line. I made one similar to this a year ago and it failed miserably; this one worked out much better but not quite there yet. My idea was to suspend smallish towers on fishing line between two diagonal elements, so it looks like the middle towers are floating in the void. Maybe if I used thinner fishing line it would camaflauge the trick better, but the real problem is that sand acts quite differently when its hanging like this - very hard to make it stand up and make those nice towers (this has to do with drainage, but I won't get into that). And the wind tosses it everywhere. Maybe I'll just pursue the "drawbridge" idea that Ari mentioned in the first comments next time...

Saomik: I like your interpretation. will have to check out that book, but be sure to avoid the movie.

Beefus: beautiferous! That's great - in fact, I'm going to make it a tag. Thanks. Yes, I was tempted to just let this one hang out there with no explanation, but I suspect the predominant comment would "how'd you do that?" - the #1 comment from passerbys at the beach. So, felt obligated to answer it upfront. Maybe next I won't...

I like the way that the structure pops out and how the wires are visible. The moving seagull is a nice touch. However, for me, the person walking away grounds this shot and puts the scene into perspective.

I've definitely fallen behind on thanking everyone for their nice comments, so here's some catching up:

Vol-au-Vent: So nice of you to stop by, and thanks for the wonderful invitation - that is a terrific group, and i'm thrilled to add this photo to it. I wanted to make sure that you read the whole caption, though: I hate to admit it, but the castle was actually one of the smallest I made all summer, only 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet long! I learned a great lesson on this one: an odd sandcastle is one thing, but a creative photo can make all the difference,
Flickr is a photosharing site, not a sandcastle-sharing site after all!

Krowser: thanks for the visit - i love your own Goldsworthy-esque creations.

Raysto: an achievement? now you're embarrassing me!

Racing Squirrel: I very much appreciate your thoughts, even if I wish the fishing line was a little less obvious - I was really hoping the middle towers would appear to be floating. Maybe next time.

Snick725: thanks, your castle is great - you gotta build some more.

aleatoric_yersinia: well, you're hanging out on the wrong beaches then! My fiance sees things like this more than she would be willing to tell me...

ScaryLily: dali-esque?! I've heard Goldworthy-esque more than once, but this is a new for me: what a nice thing to say. The b&w one next door iis actually a different photo, taken a few minutes later, but, I agree, they are awfully similar.
