if sand could outrun the sea (i think it might look like this)

if sand could outrun the sea (i think it might look like this) by sandcastlematt.
I thought of this artsy title as I was making the sandman (my first life size sandman, by the way), but by the time I was done it was nearly pitch dark and the figure had sagged so much that it hardly looks like he's running anymore.
So, after all the work, I can't do much better than this image, sorry to say. Well, it was fun to make. I've got a triptych on how I made it at:

Automatt: check out the tryptich linked above; I've got a long description of how I made it. The short answer is that I constructed a skeleton of driftwood, tied it together with twine, and covered it with dry and wet sand until it looks like its entirely made of sand. It took me seven hours... and I still wish I had a better final image of it than this, but at least it never collapsed!

I'm giving a great big round of applause. Listen carefully enough and you might just hear it. This is incredible. Well done.

Thanks everyone for the comments on this one - I was pretty nervous about this photo, since I was disappointed that this was the best representation of something I put so much work (well, fun work) into, so your words mean a lot to me - especially yours, Dancing Fish. So nice of you, as always.
Hopefully I'll have a chance to make another sandcastle or two before the season ends, but the days are getting shorter and colder, so I think sandman 2 will have to wait until May or June.

I think it's a wonderful picture... the grainyness and the sagging give your sandman more character... amazing, and probably insane ! :o)

Thank you hoolypics. Yes, the photo has more a "they're coming for you Barbara" (ie. Night of the Living Dead) feel than the graceful sand runner that I hoped for, but there's always next time.

The subject is sooo cool that the graininess of the photo adds to it.

Thanks Musa78, lebellie4, 1blessedmom, and I_am_brad - glad all of you like it. I'm a bit embarrassed by how many people have passed through my "how to" set in recent days - never anticipated this much interest in sandcastles.
Thanks also to www.loquor.com for posting this one; I'm flattered that photography blogs have taken note of the sandman.

patience?! Something this fun requires very little patience. What I would give for 7 sunny hours on the beach today! Thanks for the nice comment.
