18th Century Fortress
Juan Junipero Serra built the fortress, church and a small settlement in the late 1700's on top of a hill overlooking the port. The church walls still stand, but the fortress was crumbled in hurricane Kenna in 2002. It has since been rebuilt to resemble the original construction, although its ramshackled charm is lost. In San Blas you can hire an independent English-speaking guide to give you a comprehensive history, and take you to some of the other historic buildings in town.
