Thanks for posting this one. Fascinating! I've never seen the polka dots so small like this. The band looks like possibly a handmade replacement? Here's the standard sized dots:

This does look homemade all the way around, doesn't it? The ball in your shot appears to be plastic or glass, while this one is clearly metal. I don't recall seeing any others quite like this one.

I stumbled on this one while doing a quick wander around Brigham City. Luckily, I caught the street signs there in the lower left, so we can see exactly where it is. :) I had spotted another Norge ball in Roy on my way up, near the Sacco's produce market I have shots of in this set. I didn't get it because traffic was nuts and I would have needed to do a U-turn. I'll see if I can get a shot of it later.

All the Norge Balls that I've seen and know of (about a dozen of them) are plastic. Mind-boggling that this one is metal! I will eagerly add this to my personal list so that I may gaze upon it one day in person (soon I hope as it looks in pretty vulnerable shape).

Please go get the one in Roy -- I'm dying to see if it's metal, too. It would turn the Norge Ball World on its head! My theory is that something happened to the original ball and they recreated it (poorly) in metal. Simulated the polka dots. Very crafty. I really like the crudeness of it.

The cardinal rule of roadsiding: it's ALWAYS worth making the U-turn (or backing up for a mile on the divided highway if need be). Your life will be filled with regret if you don't photo things when you can. ; )

I will remember this rule of roadsiding, and I thank you for the instruction. I have already experienced this regret, especially with the SLC Bill and Nada's sign.

...you know, I wonder if they didn't improvise this sign using some sort of old fuel tank or something. Not too far from here is a large army surplus store that has tons of odd-shaped metal things that were bits of World War II airplanes and stuff.

The sign does look vulnerable, but the laundromat seems to be doing fine. There were people in there washing clothes at about 11:30 p.m. when I stopped back by to shoot some nearby neon. I have a hunch that they'll leave the sign alone until it's completely unreadable or knocked over by a clumsy driver - but you never know when those things might happen.

I'm glad to know it may survive through neglect! The other thing is how it's lit from above -- Real Norge Balls were illuminated from within. Perhaps you (or somebody else) can track down someone at the laundromat to unearth this sign's history?

It was still there a couple of weeks ago. If you look at the large size of my shot you can see a weird, almost soccer ball pattern in the ball.

Oh, cool - whatever this thing is, I'm glad it's still around.

It looks like it's made of a bunch of metal hexagons welded together, doesn't it?

samwibatt - It really does look like it's pieced together. I wish I would have thought to get an even closer look at it.

Notice the handle on the top of it. I swear we used to have water troughs made from the same things on the ranch where I grew up. They were cut in half, but still had the handle similar to this one. However, they were made of such heavy steel, I highly doubt anybody would want to lift a whole one on a pole for a sign. If so, the last place I want to be is underneath it when it comes down.

I drive by this on a regular basis. I need to stop and shoot it sometime. I've never seen it with such great detail as in your photos.
