Sentinel - NJ Meadowlands

    Newer Older

Sandwiched in between New York City and the urbanized communities of northern New Jersey, restored portions of the Hackensack Meadowland at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst provide welcome sanctuary for a wide array of wildlife. Part of the park sit atop an old landfill and a "garbage island" where trash was once dumped illegally. Here, Manhattan's Empire State Building stands watch over a stand of phragmites. The park stands next to a major power line corridor, a New Jersey Transit line, and several other industrial/warehouse complexes. The Meadowlands has been modified over and over by human activity over hundreds of year.
