The Mermaid and the Sailor

The Mermaid and the Sailor

A mermaid found a swimming lad,
Picked him for her own,
Pressed her body to his body,
Laughed; and plunging down
Forgot in cruel happiness
That even lovers drown.
~William Butler Yeats

Mermaids have always interested me. When I was little, The Little Mermaid was my absolute favorite movie. I watched it probably once a day. I was completely enchanted by the idea of these half fish/half people living under the sea. I would practice holding my breath so I could stay underwater longer and pretend I was a mermaid too.

Historically, though, mermaids are mostly thought to be malevolent, either intenionally or unintentionally drowning men. Even in In Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid (from which the Disney movie was adapted), it is said that mermaids forget that humans cannot breathe underwater. I am sure Disney purposely left that part out. :)

I have had the idea for this picture for awhile now...and I didn't have the guts to attempt it until this week. I knew it would be a lot of work and I wasn't sure I could pull it off, but I think it turned out pretty good! So I am very pleased. :)

Interesting.

Never Enough Time...

Never Enough Time...

Sometimes I wish the days had more hours, and the weeks had more weekends..... I feel like I never get to do enough!

I read an article on National Geographic about a new calendar proposed for 2017, that would add an extra week in December. They are calling it a "Leap Week" and it would occur every 5 to 6 years.

"Without the addition of the extra week every five or six years, this 364-day calendar on a planet that circles its sun once every 365.2422 days would eventually put Christmas in the middle of the summer due to Earth's seasonal drift."

Interesting....

Light and Motion

Light and Motion

This was inspired by John Milton's latest work. (Not safe for work). :)

I have always admired his use of the female form and the lighting and textures accompanying them in his photography. His photos are always interesting from both a photographic standpoint and a viewer standpoint, and I always look forward to seeing his ideas come to life through his photography.

He has been a long time contact of mine here on Flickr and he has been not only an inspiration to me, but a huge encouragement for me to push myself past my own comfort zone with my photography from almost the beginning of my journey!

Thanks John!

Also, I am unbelievably sore from jumping like a thousand times to get the right combo of a pose, from the scarf to my hair to remembering to point my toes and not make a weird face....

A Balancing Act

A Balancing Act

So a new year has begun. Full of new challenges and surprises that I look forward to!

I have been very busy with work, travel and of course photography. :) I have a decent side business going and I LOVE IT!

Jason and I just returned from our trip to Vietnam. It was an amazing experience. I will post pictures soon!

With the start of this new year, and after taking a MUCH needed break from Flickr and projects altogether, I have decided to start a 52 week project!
52....that number seems SO much less intimidating than 365. :) ..........Well, ask me again in a few weeks. This project, most definitely, will be a balancing act! I plan to use this project to further my Photoshop skills and push my limits of knowledge and most importantly....LEARN! I still have lots to learn. :)

Join me, will you??
