Nearly 800 people make pongal around the Kannathal temple in Nattarasankottai. They draw numbers ahead of time. Whoever draws no.1 (a great honor), goes first, and makes their pongal in this large pot. This then sets off the rest of the celebrations.

While their mothers and grand mothers made pongal and prayed, the boys fed puffed rice to the fish in the temple's tank.

When water and milk come to a boil, the women add rice to it. The woven container used for rice is called a kottan.
