These small dragonflies are named for the orange tint of the male's wings. Females as seen here have spotted wings. The spots can vary in size and sometimes females have a bit of an orange tinge as well. The obelisk pose demonstrated here is done on very hot days by some dragonfly species. It was fun to see this female in the cluster of Gray-headed Coneflowers. Perithemis tenera, Libellulidae. Central IL, Summer 2012.
