At the substation

At the substation

Norway is known for many things, one of which is hydrapower. My part of the country is completely crowded with dams and power plants, and more are being built as I am writing this words. On my way to work I drive by three different plants, and the fourth is just around the corner. This is a substation to one of the plants in the area. Since there is much more production than local usage, most of the power has to be transferred to the grid. The substation is an integral part of that transfer..

Substations like this one are obviously always built outside. Beneath the substations the ground has to be easy to maintain (obviously you can not have trees growing between the masts). Some stations use gravel, which does not need attention that often, but when it does it takes a lot of energy and time. Some, like this particular one, use grass. This is easy to maintain, but needs attention all that more often. It has to be a crazy job though, driving a lawn mover around all those high-voltage masts.

It turns out that there is a photo restriction within this kind of facilities, so I am not really at liberty to disclose a lot of information about it. Still the officials at the plant were very cooperative, well willed and surprisingly curious about the project. I was allowed acces, and appointed a personal guide during my stay there. They even contacted the gardening company and gave me a time when the lawn was being moved. All I had to do was ask.

Lighting
Well, the time of day was not really up to me to decide, although not everything was left up to chance. I made the phone call when I the lawn was getting bushy, and the forecast was promising. So the sun is coming in from the top left, approximately 10 o'clock from the cameras position. This is an available light photo where almost everything is lit by the sun. The only additional light source was a SB-600 speedlight, positioned approx. 5m in front of the camera, and just out of the frame on the left side. With a full pop and 70mm zoom, the flash provided just a little fill for the shadow side of the mover. The triggering is the courtesy of Cactus V5 :)

Pacifiers

Pacifiers

I walked across this peculiar tree in Varde in western Denmark. I do not know if this is a danish tradition, but it seems that several kids have left their pacifiers hanging there by a thread. Perhaps they were trying to quit :)

Bessastaðir

Bessastaðir

The presidential residence of Iceland. You may notice that the flag is half-mast. If you look at the date, it is the day after the terrorist attack in Oslo and Utøya.

My father and my son

My father and my son

Almost at the eastmost point of Iceland. My kid is running towards the atlantic ocean, hoping that he will be able to reach a few splashes before someone stops him. Luckily he only got his feet wet. The sea is freezingly cold, and the current is strong: A killer combination.

I live just across that ocean, by the way.
