Week 20, Assignment 1: Text
For Take a Class with Dave & Dave
I wrote poems as a kid, but in my college freshman creative writing course, I was introduced to Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman and fell in love. He didn't become my favorite poet, but he opened up a whole new world for me.
Of course it helped that I had a major crush on the T.A. who taught this class, but the fact remains: poetry opened up for me then.
These are the opening lines to "Song of Myself". Whitman believed and wrote a lot about how we are all part of the earth, the universe...sort of that whole "we are stardust" thing long before the song. ;-)
In another way, this celebration of self helped elevate me at a time when I was far down (though eventually I had much further down to go). But that core message stayed with me.
Love Yourself. Love Others. We are all part of the same thing.
