A Constant Ache/ Week 27
(52 week shot for this past week)
We're leaving in a bit to head north, with the goal of camping somewhere in the Adirondack mountains tonight, then taking a ferry to Vermont and crossing to Maine to hopefully camp on the coast for 3-4 nights. May or may not have wi-fi off and on. May or may not decide to use it. :-)
Have a great week!

I'll Raise You
Today was visiting day at my daughter's overnight camp so I got to spend the day hanging out. She's been there two weeks and has two more weeks to go and she is LOVING it! It is an arts-themed camp. Her major is theater, with minors in photography and vocal/rock. She has learned how to develop film and fell in love with it. She gets one-on-one singing instruction and she says the theater counselors have helped her have a lot more confidence.
She mentioned she learned the card game "Spit" and I couldn't remember how to play, but knew I had, so I watched her play a friend for a while before playing her myself and kicked her butt. LOL.
I miss her.

Asthetic and Kinetic
This is Bill McHugh, a retired mechanical contractor who builds kinetic sculptures for fun and displays them in his backyard.
I was out with Gwyn yesterday, who came over for lunch, to check out a mansion I had read about that was going to be knocked down. It was within walking distance, so we walked to lunch, then walked to the house. It was apparently still occupied, however, but as we came around the back we saw these sculptures and this older man puttering around back there. He went inside before he saw us. We were fascinated and I was debating knocking on the door, when Bill came back out and immediately asked if we'd like him to show us how they work. This is the "Whirl-a-Squirrel! There is more in his backyard than it shows on his website, too.
He definitely had his routine down, and we were amazed. These pieces also function as squirrel and bird feeders (with the animals aiding the movement). He goes through pounds and pounds of peanuts and bird seed every week. He doesn't sell these and in fact, has offered them as free installations to retirement homes and the like.
I cannot believe I never knew this man was here, in my own neighborhood!

Sleepin' in the woods by a fire in the night
Pete dragged out our tent from the garage yesterday and set it up in the backyard to make sure all the bits were there and that he could set it up. We're gonna toss it and our dog in the car on Monday and head north.
Pete is supposed to plan out a route today, as I've decided to try and practice releasing control...*digs fingernails into palms* LOL!
The general plan is to head to Vermont (I've been, he hasn't) and camp for a night, then head to Maine, where neither of us has ever been before, and find somewhere near the coast to camp, while totally reserving the right to find a cheap, dog-friendly motel at any point. :-)
Hoping also to stop and see a friend in NH on the way back! Anyone along the probably route, let me know and maybe we can meet for a cuppa joe on our travels. :-)

Muscle Memory
On the platform in Cold Spring, NY waiting for the train to Grand Central Station.
Are we imprinted
by the essence of a place?
Does it call us home?
I was born in Poughkeepsie, NY and moved to the house where my parents still live when I was 2 and a half years old. Each time I'm in this area, the air, the smells, the very nature of the place feels...right.
