El levantamiento del dos de mayo no fue la rebelión del Estado español contra los franceses, sino la de las clases populares de Madrid contra el ocupante tolerado (por indiferencia, miedo o interés) por gran cantidad de miembros de la Administración. De hecho, la entrada de las tropas francesas se había hecho legalmente, al amparo del Tratado de Fontainebleau, cuyos límites sin embargo pronto vulneraron, excediendo el cupo permitido y ocupando plazas que no estaban en camino hacia Portugal, su supuesto objetivo. La Carga de los Mamelucos presenta las principales características de la lucha: profesionales perfectamente equipados (los mamelucos o los coraceros) frente a una multitud prácticamente desarmada; presencia activa en el combate de mujeres, algunas de las cuales perdieron incluso la vida (Manuela Malasaña o Clara del Rey). En fin, presencia casi exclusiva del pueblo y del elemento militar francés.
The Uprising of the 2nd of May was not the revolt of the Spanish State against the French occupation, but of the popular classes of Madrid against an occupier tolerated (either because of indifference, fear or interest) by a large number of members of the Spanish Administration. In fact, the entry of French troops into Spain had been done legally, under the Treaty of Fontainebleau, the limits of which the French soon violated, exceeding its provisions and occupying spaces that were not on their way to Portugal, their supposed goal. The Charge of the Mameluks, in the center of Madrid, represents the main characteristics of the fight on that day: well-equipped professionals (Mameluks or Cuirassiers) against a virtually unarmed crowd, with the active presence of women in the combat, some of those women even lost their lives ( Manuela Malasaña or Clara del Rey). The uprising was entirely carried out by the people of Madrid with out support from the Spanish military.

Te dejo un poquito de esta historia, como afectó a este pueblo y lo que marcó en la trayectoria de unos tiempos que días atrás se ha celebrado como bien sabes.
Me admiras siempre en capturas de una historia con fechas y nombres amigo.
Las tropas regulares del general Maransin y los soldados de caballería y de línea, húsares y cazadores de los coroneles Bonnemains y Rignoux fueron blanco constante de aquellas partidas de voluntarios en la zona de Montellano.
En uno de estos ataques un destacamento francés de
alrededor de 400 hombres, que se dirigía de Utrera a Ronda, atacó
Montellano el 14 de Abril de 1810. El ataque fue repelido por la feroz
resistencia de los vecinos de la Villa, causando además 7 bajas entre los franceses. El día 22 volvió a presentarse otro contingente francés al mando de Bonnemains que al encontrar de nuevo la resistencia local decidió incendiar el pueblo, éste será destruido en su práctica totalidad, a excepción de parte de la iglesia y alguna que otra vivienda. Las pobres techumbres de pasto de las humildes viviendas actuaron con aliados del ejército francés. Los refuerzos llegados desde Puerto Serrano y Algodonales al mando de Salcedo y Gaspar Tardío, hicieron retroceder a la tropa francesa en dirección a Bornos. Antes del incendio y la retirada se produjo el saqueo y la destrucción, con especial intensidad en la iglesia. Aparte de algunos rehenes se produjeron también muertos que, dada la virulencia del ataque, son difíciles de cuantificar.
Especial impresión tuvo que causar entre los montellaneros el fusilamiento del Capellán del Convento de San Pablo. Romero y su familia se retiraron hacia Algodonales, villa que sufrió la misma suerte, siendo sitiada e incendiada. Romero murió combatiendo en aquellas calles de Algodonales el 2 de mayo de 1810.
