iPod funeral 01

iPod funeral 01 by sabellachan.
My coworker Jessica's 4th gen iPod finally gave out, after years of faithful service. She has the brilliant idea to head out on our lunch break and give the iPod a proper funeral. I went along to help out.

She said that the iPod started giving the "sad iPod" icon. I guess it was just its time... She used that thing to death (obviously).

@TomasSoukup: Don't cry! It's gone to a better place!

@*nathan: Eh, we also put a Sharpie to it. ;)

@Mikmac: Don't look at me! I didn't kill it!

@Dean_: Naw, we didn't leave it there. Jess took it back with her.

If you bring that dead iPod to an Apple Store (rather than bury it, which is illegal) they'll give you 10% off a new one. If you're a student or a teacher, that works in addition to your $20-$30 discount.

A great photo op!

But let me add this for posterity:

A new hard drive is $100 and a new battery is $20 for a 4g iPod (assuming this is the 20g, if not, the hard drive will be a bit more). The new drive will be a lower-power, more-vibration-resistant, 30GB Toshiba MK3006GAL. The battery will be a 20% longer-life LI-ION than your 4g originally had, from Sonnet Tech (they even throw in the tools you need for disassembly, and have a video you can watch on how to do it which will help you with both the battery and the hard drive replacement). I have that hard drive in my 4g, (former) 20GB iPod, and I guarantee that it works.

Total price: $120 + shipping. Taking the iPod apart and putting these things in is not nearly as hard as you might think. You could do it. The result will be a 4g iPod with a better battery and 33% more hard drive space -- better than the day you bought it, minus any cosmetic damage.

Things other than the hard drive can break in an iPod, of course, and those things may not be repairable at all, but the hard drive is going to be the culprit in over 90% of all iPod deaths, I suspect (especially if you get the sad face icon, and the screen is not obviously destroyed and you didn't drop it off a building or into a swimming pool).

Seriously consider this if you want to resurrect the iPod.

*IF* you have this happen to you, one fix I can recommend is, wrap it in a towel or something soft and then bang it semi-hard on a carpeted floor. The shock can un-"sad" your hard drive. My employee had this happen to him and the fix worked great. Figure if it's already broken it can't hurt, anyway... Also there are other things to try too, including forcing restart on the thing and reformatting it too

To everyone: Wow, so I would normally leave a message for everyone individually, but I'm gone for two days, and everyone goes crazy! But thanks for all the comments! :D

No, we didn't leave it in the ground. Yes, we are aware of the Apple store's recycled iPod program, but we thought this would be funnier (and a better photo op!). No, we would not be looking to get it repaired, because Jessica has since bought a 5G iPod (she was just looking for an excuse to buy one anyway!). And yes, how DID we get by without these things??

Oh, and btw, how does one get into the "interestingness archives"? That's a new one for me...

sabellachan, Interesetingness (note the capital 'I') is a crazy algorithm that Flickr works out based on views, links, tags, comments, and a million other things. You probably have noticed that you can look at your own photos ranked by, among other things, "Interestingness." Well, that extends to the level of the whole site, and apparently this lovely shot made it all the way to the top thirty or so Interesting photos on the whole site.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Funerals: Celebrations, Memories, and Goodbyes, and we'd love to have your photo added to the group.

It's not the sort of picture I would have expected to see in that group.

Which makes it perfect.
