Squawroot

This strange wildflower is now poking through the leaf litter in southern Ohio. Resembling pine cones, it contains no chlorophyll and hence cannot conduct photosynthesis and make its own food. So, it becomes parasitic on the roots of trees and steals tree sap to assure its existence.
