Displacement along a Small Fault at Pillar Point. This small, unnamed fault along Maverick's Beach at Pillar Point is parallel to, and about 500 yards west of, the much larger San Gregorio Fault. It is one of many thousands of small right-lateral-slip faults that are part of the San Andreas system. The fault plane, seen here in the Purisima Formation, is roughly perpendicular to the line of sight. The movement along the fault is primarily horizontal with a small component of vertical displacement. Note the seep where the fault intersects the beach at the base of Pillar Point Bluff, caused by the greater porosity in the fractured rock along the fault plane. Pillar Point.
